Why We Sing
1:00pm • sept 30 • the Guild
Throughout history songs and music have been the solace of the oppressed and outcast. From the plantations of the south to the roaming rhythms of nomadic peoples, music has been a binding force and a source of joy and hope for many. This documentary follows the advent of the gay voice in music, namely the many gay choirs that bring joy and voice to our community. Following four varied choruses across our country, ranging from San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, which is the oldest and most influential chorus in the U.S. to the Transcendence Gospel Choir, which is the first transgendered choir in America, we are privy to the many struggles and stories of choirs across our country. Yet even such joyous purveyors of music are not immune from prejudice and hate, but their songs are only more infused with hope and joy. This documentary is not only foot-stomping fun but also it is truly a reason to stand up and sing! – James Montaño (USA, 2006, 56 min, dir: Lawrence B. Dillon)
