An offbeat story of love, panic and lust from Denmark, Soap follows the strained, strange relationship between a young transsexual, Veronika, and her new neighbor, Charlotte. Veronica prefers to keep to herself with her little dog and a romantic soap show on TV, while Charlotte gets through the nights with one-night stands. When charlotte buys a new bed and Veronika helps her move it in, they are drawn into an unlikely romance. Veronika and Charlotte are too afraid to admit they are falling in love and begin hurting each other instead. When Veronika’s sex change application is finally approved, the likelihood of them entering a relationship dwindles even further away. With a raw physicality and Dogma-influenced visual style, the film seamlessly uses the conventions of the soap opera to create an entirely modern romantic drama. –Stephanie Summers (Denmark/Sweden, 2006, 102 min, dir: Pernille Fischer Christensen.
