This colorful and engaging film tells the story of the Wongs, a chinese- American family living a wonderfully dysfunctional existence in the New York suburbs. Ed, the father, has recently retired, and although he longs to escape his mundane life, the dramas in the lives of his three daughters throw a wrench into his plans. Samantha, the oldest, and engaged, begins to reexamine her life. Julie, the middle sibling, is so shy that her only social interaction is a weekly ballroom dancing class. A fourth year medical student, she meets a movie star, Mia Scarlett, at the hospital where the actress is researching a role. The two become involved, and Julie is conflicted with the struggles inherent in dating a celebrity and trying to keep her fractured family together. Katie, the youngest of the Wong girls, is a lethargic high school senior caught up in a prank war with her nemesis and neighbor, Simon. However, though the family seems to be unable to communicate verbally with each other, the images and stories from their shared history serve as the bond that ties them together. –Rachel Popowcer (USA, 2005, 92 min, dir:Georgia Lee.
