Eleven Men Out

Ottar is a big-time soccer star in Iceland, at the height of his game. In a post-game interview with a journalist, Ottar figures it’s time to announce that he’s gay, creating a cover story that lands him in hot water with his teammates and their owner. The team is unable to accept this new Ottar and gives him the boot, leaving soccerloving Ottar with few options. He drops in on practice with an amateur club that has a couple of gay members and asks to join; suddenly the club is signing up gay players, losing its straight ones and renaming itself Pride United. Ottar is still the cover boy, but he’s no activist: he’s got his hands full dealing with his estranged wife, their sullen teenage son. Eleven Men Out is a hip new look at fame, coming out and family, delivered with a tone and humor only Iceland could provide. The film is a randy, uplifting reminder that life doesn’t necessarily get better when you come out; it only gets more complicated. (Iceland/Finland, 2005, 85 min, dir: Robert L Douglas.
