Quite possibly the greatest bad movie of all time, this spectacularly tacky 1980 disco-era musical/fantasy has recently become a cult phenomenon. Set in the then-futuristic landscape of 1994 America, The Apple is an absurd fantasy/musical and religious allegory that envisions a world where evil, greedy entertainment magnates rule all media, and fashion is wholly dictated by glittery disco-era sensibilities. While America is swept up in the rock craze, “the bIm,” young folk singers Alphie and Bibi struggle to get their vanilla-bland ballads heard -- only to be seduced by the power of the demonic music mogul Mr. Boogalow, who catapults Bibi to pop-packaged mega-stardom. The film takes its biblical allegories to surreal heights -- in one musical number, God descends from heaven in a rolls royce to activate the rapture. – Travis Crawford (USA, 1980, 90 min. dir: Menahem Golan)
