In the third film of his trilogy of acclaimed documentaries, director Tom Murray (Fish Can’t Fly and Farm Families) broaches the oft-misunderstood and important subject of gender identity. Traveling to the far corners of our country, Tom interviews ten vastly different transgendered women, who weave tales of self-discovery and the trials of finding one’s place in American culture. Yet, to round out this rather compelling documentary, we are introduced to Judy Kirchner, a transgendered woman who has been living as a woman for well over a decade and is contemplating reversing her sex change. With the financial and emotional backing of anti-gay and antitrans religious organizations Judy finds herself struggling to rectify her current gender with her emotional state and religious beliefs. Director Tom Murray once again strikes a chord with this riveting documentary, forcing us to take a hard look at the many differences that color our community and the many binding battles for dignity and justice that we all wage. Definitely not a film to miss. – James Montaño (USA, 2006, 82 min, dir: Tom Murray)
