Acclaimed director thom Fitzgerald creates a deftly epic look at the international face of HIV and AIDS. Weaving three delicately told tales, strewn across three very different continents, he delves into the personal, political and financial costs of HIV/AIDS. In China a blood collection service setup by a strange woman (Lucy Liu) suddenly begins to tear the community apart as many begin to fall ill to a mysterious epidemic. Meanwhile in the lush heartland of Africa, three nuns (Chloe Sevigny, Sandra Oh, and Olympia Dukakis) attempt to convert a local tribe before the ravages of the epidemic takes their souls. When one of the nuns attempts to save a family of orphans, she finds herself embroiled in a battle for her soul as well. And in North America a mother (Stockard Channing) watches helplessly as her son (Shawn Ashmore) discovers his HIV status, ultimately driving her to make a deal with the devil. This heartfelt three-fold tale confronts love and sacrifice in our world and the lengths we will go to live. – James Montaño (Canada, 2005, 124 min, dir: Thom Fitzgerald.
