If you put the camp of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the heart of Transamerica, and the work of Bob Fosse into a big pink blender and had Pedro Almodovar press ‘puree,’ the result would be this outrageously fabulous Spanish film from writer/director Ramon Salazar.
Adolfo is a pre-op transsexual with two very big problems–the eight inches of genetic windfall between his legs and his narcolepsy. As he attempts to raise money to have his 20 centimeters removed, he works the streets as Marieta and is prone to fits of sleep at the most inopportune times. It is during these dream sequences, with the help of music from Queen, Madonna and Dusty Springfield, that Adolfo/Marieta’s true passions are revealed: he wants to be a performer, and has the talent to do so. With the help of a dwarf cello player, Marieta maneuvers her way through the streets of madrid and into the heart of El Reponador, a fruit stocking hunk who doesn’t mind the bulge in marieta’s pants.
Salazar’s talent as a director and choreographer is obvious in the elaborate productions that accompany the performances of his main character. It’s enough to make one forget the subtitles and just sit back and enjoy the feast for the eyes that are his dancers and players lighting up the screen. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss this outrageous, campy and wonderfully heartfelt film. – Jeremy Olsen (Spain/France, 2005, 113 min. dir: Ramón Salazar.
